Today Georgian Cup competition has started. Traditionally all Super League and “A” League teams are taking part in championship. The only exception is the new member of “A” league, whosew identity is usually  revealed before the start of tournaments. That’s why seats for 5 participant of “A” league is reserved in Georgian Cup and debutant Iverioni will miss this year’s competition.

According to tournament’s rules, after draw, teams are divided in 1/8 final pairs. 1/8 and 1/4 final series consist of 2 games. During semi-finals and finals competing teams will face each other only once and series will not take place anymore.

Dinamo – TSU

Today 8 out of 4 games took place in Olympic palace. In the first game of the day TSU faced Dinamo and convincingly defeated opponent by 94:51. Dinamo is Georgian club with most championship titles, however times have changed and team is struggling with roaster, that was the main reason for their elimination from Super League.

The fact that TSU was favorite of the game was obvious from the beginning. Even though winners were playing without Giorgi Tsintsadze, they did not struggle to defeated opponent by 43 points. In case University team will not lose game against Dinamo with 43 points difference, TSU will advance to quarter-finals. Ivane Migineishvili was leader of today’s game. He scored 17 points, 11 rebounds and 4 assists. Nodar Gogodze collected 17 points as well. Jimon Henson contributed 16 points. Victor Alcorn with 20 points was Dinamo’s best scorer.
Second game of the series will be hold on January 17th.

Batumi-Mega

Mega has significantly improved its performance and is in the middle of Super League’s standing. Mega’s newcomer, Zack Walton is the main reason for team’s improvement. He is efficient under the rim, quick on the court and has great 3 point shooting efficiency. His addition raised Mega’s confidence and results. Team coached by Nikoloz Cherkezishvili defeated Cactus at Sakandelidze-Korkia Memorial tournament and overcame TSU in semi-final. Now, they beat Batumi in Georgian Cup 1/8 final. Batumi also acquired new player, Jordan Sesion, however he did not have enough time to play with team.

We have discussed Zac Walton’s performance however it should be noted that Mega has its own leader, who scored 7 three-pointers and collected 38 points in total. Zac Walton collected 18 points, Otar Buliava contributed 17 points. Overall Mega won game by 103:95 and has serious exam in second game of the series. Batumi will try to cut down 8 point difference at home and in case they win by 9 points, will advance to the quarter finals of the cup.

Vera-Kutaisi

Kutaisi efficiently used Christmas brake and filled its roaster. Chad Phraizer and Amondae Coleman are the new legionary players of the team. National team player, Kakha Jintcharadze will also join the team as soon as he received release paper from Iraq.

Kutaisi did not struggle to defeat Vera and team coached by Kote Tugushi returned to Kutaisi with 30 points handicap. Kutaisi has almost guaranteed place in quarter final. Cristopher Wayer was leader of the winners. He scored 23 points and 15 rebounds. Jarvis Rey and Luka Maziashvili scored per 16 points. Chad Freizer contributed 14 points and 10 assists. Vera’s newcomer Derik Nix was team’s best scorer- 31 points and 8 rebounds.

Second game between Kutaisi and Vera will take place on January 17th, in Rustavi.

Olimpi-GTUNI

One of the leaders of Super League gained planned victory over Gtuni from “A” league. Gtuni began playing well, and took the lead by 26:11 in first quarter, however Davit Rogava’s Olimpi regulated game immediately.
Thanks to quick and well planed game Olimpi cut down difference and advanced by 35:16. Rogava’s team has not lost leadership afterwards and gained 16 point handicap before next game.
Linton Eslais with 25 points became the best scorer of the winners. Luka Kalatozishvili had best efficiency coefficient, he collected 16 points, 11 rebounds and 4 assists. Giorgi Turdziladze contributed 15 points and 8 rebounds. Vasil Beruashvili with 24 points and 7 rebounds was best among Gtuni players. Kamar Macnight scored 16 points, Anthony Elston collected 15 points. Nika Gogokhia scored 5 out of 5 two-pointers and contributed 10 points to his team.
